How Big Is Your God?

There is a lot of construction going on at Kennesaw United Methodist Church where I attend.  It has been exciting to watch the changes and the project as it nears completion.  One of the most thrilling changes has been the addition of a tower with a cross on the top which is being added to the front of the building.  We have all marked the progress each week with great anticipation. First, the top of the tower was constructed on the ground and then once it was complete with a cross placed on top, it was raised and placed atop the tower. While the tower was under construction, the cross was originally housed in a hallway of the church.  I passed by it one day and was amazed at it's size.  In fact, to my rather uneducated mind, the cross looked to be way, way too big for the top of the tower.  As I stood next to the cross, I remember thinking that it was almost half the size of the tower and what were they thinking...wouldn't it dwarf the tower?

However, the day I drove into the church, saw the cross towering above the church and outlined against the blue sky for the first time,  I was struck by how much smaller the cross looked.  It was definitely in proportion to the tower (the builder obviously knew what he was doing), but I was amazed that something that had impressed me as huge, ginormous really, could now appear so small.  Then it struck me that isn't that just like our relationship with God?  When we get up close and personal, when we press in close to God, when we are engaged in a relationship with Him, aren't we impressed with just how big, how amazingly vast, how huge is His love for us?  And when we draw away, and view Him from afar, don't we think how small, how distant, how insignificant He is? Where are you standing in relationship to God?  Might that affect how you perceive Him?

Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;  but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles;  they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.  Isaiah 40:28-31

  1. Wonderful post, Lynne!

Yes, we too often forget just how large and in charge our God is. When we do, we only cheat ourselves of the wonder and awe we should feel in His presence and in the knowledge that He cares for each of us.

    Blessings always!
