In one of the Peanuts comic strips Lucy says to Charlie Brown, "Why do you think we're put here on earth Charlie Brown?" To which he responds, "To make others happy." Lucy says, "I don't think I'm making anyone very happy... of course nobody's making ME very happy either... SOMEBODY'S NOT DOING HIS JOB!!"
Have you ever felt that way? Felt like it's all one sided with the energy going out but not much coming back in? Felt like you're doing all the work and others are slackers? Felt taken advantage of? There is a subtle difference between serving and taking care of, between enabling and empowering. Serving others doesn't always make others happy but it does always empower them. Remember when Jesus washed his disciples' feet, did it make them happy? Actually, it made them uncomfortable but it did empower them, to become servants themselves. Serving others benefits both the giver and the receiver.
I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 15:16
